Don’t worry about the number on the label—choosing the size that fits your measurements will give you the best starting point for alterations and a beautiful final fit.

How to Measure Your Bust, Waist and Hips

For the most accurate measurements, wear fitted clothing or underwear and use a soft measuring tape. Keep the tape level and comfortably firm without pulling it too tightly. If possible, ask someone to help you.

Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your bust.

Waist: Measure around your natural waistline, usually the narrowest part of your torso.

Hips: Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and bottom.

Is wedding dress sizing different from normal clothing?

Yes. Wedding dress sizing is often different from the size you normally wear in everyday clothing, and it can also vary between bridal designers. At Leah S Designs, we focus on your measurements and the fit of the gown—not the number on the label.

What if I’m between two wedding dress sizes?

If your measurements fall between two sizes, we will generally recommend the larger size. It is usually easier for our alterations team to take a wedding dress in than to let it out. A lace-up back may also provide some additional flexibility.

Should I choose my size from my bust, waist or hips?

We will usually begin with the measurement that requires the largest size. However, the style of the wedding dress also matters. For example, the hip measurement may be less important for a flowing A-line gown, while it is very important when choosing a fitted or mermaid dress.

How do I measure myself for a wedding dress?

Using a soft measuring tape, measure around the fullest part of your bust, your natural waistline and the fullest part of your hips. Keep the tape level and comfortably firm without pulling it too tightly. For the most accurate result, we recommend asking someone to help you.

Does a lace-up back provide more flexibility?

Yes. A lace-up back provides more flexibility through the bodice than a zip-up back and can be adjusted slightly if your measurements change. However, it is still important to begin with the most suitable gown size.

What wedding dress sizes can I try on at Leah S Designs?

Our Hallam bridal showroom has wedding dress samples available to try on in a wide range of sizes, from size 6 to 28. This means you can properly experience different shapes, fabrics and styles before choosing your dress.

For sizes 26 and above, we ask that the gown be purchased in store so we can carefully check your measurements and help you choose the most suitable fit.
