5 Things to Check at Your Final Wedding Dress Fitting

Your final wedding dress fitting is your chance to make sure your gown feels comfortable and works for the way you’ll wear it on the day. Bring the shoes you’ve chosen, take your time trying everything on, and speak up if something doesn’t feel right.

At Leah S Designs, alterations are carried out by Ginger Pins, our in-store alterations team. Brides should allow for two or three fittings, with alterations usually organised around eight weeks before the wedding. Your timing may depend on the work your gown needs.

1. Bring your wedding shoes and underwear

Wear the shoes and underwear you plan to have on under your dress on the day. Your heel height affects where the hem sits, and different underwear can change how the bodice feels.

If you’re still deciding on shoes or have changed your mind since your last appointment, let your seamstress know. It’s much easier to check the length and fit with the right items there.

2. Bring your veil and accessories

Bring your veil, jewellery, hairpiece or any other accessories you already plan to wear. Seeing them with your gown helps you check that everything works together, and lets you practise putting on and taking off your veil.

If you’re still choosing accessories, that’s okay. The fitting is a good time to see what suits the dress and ask for advice.

3. Speak up about anything that doesn’t feel right

Check how the gown feels through the bust, waist and hips. Notice whether the straps stay in place and whether you can breathe and move comfortably.

If something feels too tight, loose or uncomfortable, tell your seamstress. You don’t need to know what alteration is needed; just explain what you’re feeling and where. It’s better to talk it through during the fitting than worry about it later.

4. Walk, sit and practise moving in your dress

A wedding gown needs to feel good when you move, not just when you’re standing in front of the mirror. Walk around, sit down, lift your arms and try the movements you expect to make on the day.

If your gown has a train, ask how to manage it after the ceremony. Practise any bustle or fastening with your seamstress, and take a short video on your phone so you can refer to it later.

5. Bring one trusted person for a second look

A supportive friend or family member can help you remember instructions and take photos or notes, especially if you’re practising with a veil or train. Choose someone who’ll help you feel calm and confident.

You’re the one wearing the gown, so the final decision is yours. If you have a question or concern, ask your seamstress before you leave.
